Welcome to Moanalua Gardens, a beautiful 24-acre privately owned public park located in the Moanalua district of Honolulu, Hawaii, just off Interstate H-201 near Tripler Army Medical Center. You should visit this peaceful destination to explore its rich royal heritage and impressive natural sights. As you stroll through the park, you will encounter the historic Kamehameha V Cottage, located at the western end of the gardens.
Originally built in the 1850s by Prince Lot Kapuāiwa—who later became King Kamehameha V—this unique home features three separate units for dining, living, and entertaining, all connected by roofed porches. It was willed to Samuel Mills Damon in 1884 by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop and moved to its current location in 1960. Standing prominently in a grassy central area, you will also find the famous Hitachi tree.
This massive, umbrella-shaped monkeypod tree is registered as an exceptional tree by the City and County of Honolulu. Famous in Japan, it has served as a corporate symbol for Hitachi, Ltd. since 1973. Additionally, the park grounds host the annual Prince Lot Hula Festival, making it a truly special cultural stop on your Oahu itinerary.
