Inside the historic Lahore Fort in Punjab, Pakistan, you will discover Moti Masjid, or the Pearl Mosque. Built between 1630 and 1635 by Mughal emperor Jahangir and modified under Shah Jahan, this 17th-century structure is the very first of the famous Mughal "pearl" mosques. Stepping into the northwestern corner of the Dewan-e-Aam quadrangle near the Alamgiri Gate, you will see a brilliant religious building crafted entirely from white Makrana marble.
The name Moti reflects its perceived preciousness, following the Mughal tradition of naming sacred sites after gemstones. Throughout its dramatic history, the building was converted into a Sikh temple called Moti Mandir, served as a state treasury under Ranjit Singh, and held precious gems during the British takeover before being restored to its former status. When you visit, admire its unique five-arched façade featuring cusped arches and smooth baluster columns, which sets it apart from similar three-arched mosques.
