Why Lahore

Lahore is the capital and largest city of Pakistan's Punjab province, situated in the central-eastern part of the region along the banks of the Ravi River. As the nation's second-largest urban center with a population exceeding 14 million people, it operates as a major hub for commerce, industry, and higher learning. Long regarded as the historic and cultural heart of the wider Punjab area, Lahore is characterized by a socially liberal, progressive, and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Human activity at the location spans roughly two millennia, with the settlement rising to prominence toward the end of the tenth century. Throughout its history, the city functioned as the capital for several ruling powers, including the Ghaznavid Empire, the Mamluk dynasty, and the Delhi Sultanate. Its most prosperous era unfolded under the Mughal Empire, during which Emperor Akbar made it an imperial capital in 1584, re-fortifying its citadel and establishing long-standing neighborhoods and markets. Subsequent emperors further enhanced the city; Emperor Jahangir and his wife Nur Jahan were buried in the Shahdara Bagh suburb, Shah Jahan expanded the fort with white marble structures and laid out the Shalamar Gardens, and Aurangzeb constructed the massive Badshahi Mosque alongside the Alamgiri Gate.

The city remains one of the primary travel destinations in Pakistan, renowned for its architectural legacy, sacred spaces, and historic districts. Among its most celebrated landmarks are the Lahore Fort and Shalamar Gardens, both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Within the historic Walled City, visitors can explore intricate historical structures such as the Wazir Khan Mosque, the Shahi Hammam bathhouse, and the ancient Akbari Mandi grain market. The urban landscape is further enriched by numerous Sufi and Sikh shrines.

In addition to its physical monuments, Lahore maintains an influential standing in modern arts and academia. Designated as a UNESCO City of Literature, it serves as the core of Pakistan's publishing sector and literary scene, while also hosting the Punjabi film industry and acting as a principal center for Qawwali music. Furthermore, the city houses several of the nation's leading universities, reinforcing its status as a major educational center.
