Suneri Mosque

Located in the historic Walled City of Lahore, the Sunehri Mosque—also known as the Golden Mosque or Talai Mosque—offers you a captivating glimpse into late Mughal architecture. Built in 1753 by Nawab Bukhari Khan during the decline of the Mughal Empire, this remarkable sanctuary stands out from earlier monuments. Built on an 11-foot elevated plinth above bustling bazaar shops whose rents historically funded its upkeep, you reach the mosque by ascending a 16-step staircase.

As you explore, you will discover a small 65-by-43-foot courtyard featuring a central ablution tank, surrounded by a prayer chamber and marble domes covering seven prayer chambers. Notice the striking fusion of late Mughal elements alongside influences from Sikh architecture in nearby Amritsar. The mosque's four lofty corner minarets soar to 54 meters high, but its defining feature remains its iconic golden domes.

Following a period of Sikh control after 1799, Ranjit Singh returned the mosque to Muslim worshippers and donated gold for the domes, showcasing religious accommodation. Restored in 2011 with new marble floors and re-gilded domes, this unique site provides you an unforgettable look at Lahore's vibrant history and architectural heritage.
