Located just about 700 meters from the famous Mysore Palace in Karnataka, Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens—commonly known as Mysore Zoo—is India’s oldest zoo and one of the oldest in the world. Originally created in 1892 from the private menagerie of Maharaja Chamaraja Wadiyar X, this sprawling 157-acre attraction offers you a fascinating look at over 168 different species in spacious, naturalistic enclosures. As you walk through the grounds, you will experience a premier conservation and educational space featuring an artificial lake, a historic bandstand, and convenient access to the nearby Karanji Lake Nature Park with its lush bird sanctuary.
Mysore Zoo holds more elephants than any other zoo in India, currently housing ten of these gentle giants. It is also the only zoological park in the entire country where you can see chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, white rhinos, and cheetahs all in one place. Beyond these rare primates and big cats, you will encounter green anacondas, diverse reptiles, and abundant birdlife across restored wetland areas.
Whether you are marveling at rare wildlife or exploring the adjacent Natural History Museum grounds, you will enjoy a deeply educational, historic journey into India's natural heritage.
