Why Mysore

Mysore, officially named Mysuru, is a prominent heritage destination located in the southern part of Karnataka, India. Situated at an average altitude of 770 meters (2,530 feet) at the base of the Chamundi Hills, the city lies between the Kaveri River to the north and the Kabini River to the south. Frequently referred to as the City of Palaces and the cultural capital of the state, it is widely recognized for its historic environment, clean urban areas, and rich royal traditions.

The settlement originally developed around a sixteenth-century fort built at a village called Puragere. For nearly six centuries, Mysore functioned as the historic capital of the Kingdom of Mysore under the Wadiyar dynasty. During the late eighteenth century, the rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan expanded the kingdom's economic influence by introducing silk cultivation and mulberry planting. Although British commissioners temporarily transferred administrative control to Bangalore in 1831, Mysore regained its capital status in 1881 before eventually joining independent India.

Visitors to the city can explore several major architectural and natural attractions. The famous Mysore Palace stands as a central historic feature, while the Chamundeshwari Temple sits atop the nearby Chamundi Hills. The area contains multiple scenic lakes, including Kukkarahalli, Lingambudhi, and Karanji Lake, which houses the largest walk-through aviary in India. The local zoo is another established location for visitors within the urban center.

Culture and local craft play a significant role in the city's identity. Mysore is especially famous for its annual Dasara festival, an occasion that attracts hundreds of thousands of international travelers. The city lends its name to a variety of unique goods and cultural forms, including fine silk saris, traditional silk turbans known as Mysore peta, classic Mysore paintings, and sandalwood soaps. Other noted local items include betel leaves, the sweet delicacy Mysore pak, and a distinctive variety of jasmine flower called Mysore mallige.

Mysore features a tropical climate defined by three main seasons: summer from March to May, monsoon rains from June to October, and winter from November to February. The city is equipped with internal bus transit and is connected to broader regional travel routes by intercity bus, railway, and air transport services.
