Located in Kathmandu east of the Kaiser Mahal and right next to Thamel, the Narayanhiti Palace Museum offers you a direct window into Nepal’s royal history. Transformed into a public museum in 2008 following the 2006 revolution and the abolition of the monarchy, this site previously served as the residence and principal workplace for the Kingdom of Nepal’s monarchs. Built in 1963 by order of King Mahendra and designed by American architect Benjamin Polk, the complex incorporates Nepalese architecture alongside Late Victorian interior styles.
As you explore the 52 rooms named after Nepali districts, you can discover the grand Gorkha Baithak throne room, featuring a 60-foot pagoda ceiling, a 48-foot chandelier, and columns adorned with Hindu demigods. You will also see Kaski Sadan, the reception hall decorated with life-size royal portraits and two charging taxidermy Bengal tigers hunted by past kings. Beyond the main state and private wings, the palace grounds encompass impressive courtyards, fountains, a military barrack, helipads, the historic Mahendra Manzil, an iconic Hindu temple spire tower, and an ancient Licchavi-period Garuda statue.
