Singha Durbar 🇳🇵

Located right in the centre of Kathmandu, north of Babar Mahal and Thapathali Durbar and east of Bhadrakali Temple, Singha Durbar (meaning "Lion's Palace") is a historic palace complex built in June 1908 by Chandra Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana. Initially intended as a private residence, it was sold to the Government of Nepal and became the official residence of the Rana prime ministers, later transitioning into national property housing government offices, the Pratinidhi Sabha, the Rastriya Sabha, Radio Nepal, and Nepal Television.

Designed by Kumar Narsingh Rana and Kishor Narsingh Rana, its exterior architecture presents a striking blend of Palladian, Corinthian, Neoclassical, and Baroque styles. Inside, the magnificent State Hall stands out as the largest, most ornate space, adorned with Italian marble floors, Murano glass crystal chandeliers, Belgian mirrors, and English stained glass doors.

You can also trace its history through the Gallery Baithak, originally constructed for meeting foreign dignitaries before serving as a parliament building. Although the complex suffered major fires in 1973 and 2025, alongside damage from the 2015 earthquake, public discussions continue regarding the reconstruction and restoration of this central administrative landmark.
