Shahid Gate 🇳🇵

When you visit Kathmandu, Nepal, make time to experience Shahid Gate, also known as Sahid Gate or Martyr's Gate. Designed by Shankar Nath Rimal, this historic monument was inaugurated on April 13, 1961, by King Mahendra. Although the king originally named it Nepal Smarak, locals affectionately began calling it Shahid Gate, the name by which you will know it today. As you explore this landmark, you are looking at a powerful tribute to Nepali history and the struggle for democracy.

As of 2016, the monument featured five statues honoring key historic figures. You will see statues honoring four brave martyrs—Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Gangalal Shrestha, Dashrath Chand, and Shukraraj Shastri—positioned above their arms. These courageous individuals famously stood up to the 104-year-old Rana dynasty. Atop the monument stood a statue of former King Tribhuvan, who partnered with the people in 1950 (B.S.

2007) to help bring democracy to Nepal. However, in 2012, a Nepali cabinet meeting decided to relocate King Tribhuvan's statue to the Narayanhiti Museum, leaving the focus on the martyrs. A visit here offers you a meaningful moment to connect directly with Nepal's inspiring heritage.
