Why Ningbo

Ningbo is a sub-provincial city situated in northeastern Zhejiang Province, China, where it serves as the southern economic center for the Yangtze River Delta megalopolis. Positioned along the East China Sea, the city lies south of Hangzhou Bay, which separates it from Shanghai, and borders Zhoushan to the east, Shaoxing to the west, and Taizhou to the south. Its diverse geography spans coastal plains, valleys, low-lying mountain ranges, and an extensive oceanic territory containing 531 islands.

The region's historical roots extend back thousands of years to early settlements of the Jingtou Mountain and Hemudu cultures on the Ningshao Plain, where ancient residents engaged in rice farming and seafood consumption. During its history, Ningbo was known as Mingzhou, a title inspired by the Sun Lake and Moon Lake situated within its historic city walls. The city developed into a key commercial terminal along the Silk Road and grew into a major hub for ocean-going trade, later becoming one of five Chinese treaty ports opened to foreign commerce in 1842.

Within the city, the central business district is bisected by the Yong River, which flows near Yong Hill. Visitors to the area can encounter historical and cultural landmarks, including Moon Lake and the Ayuwang Temple, a long-venerated site associated with the early spread of Buddhism in China. The town of Cicheng contains the historical site of Juzhang City, established during the Spring and Autumn period. Ningbo was also historically recognized for its traditional Chinese furniture production and craftsmanship.

Administratively, Ningbo consists of six central districts—Haishu, Yinzhou, Jiangbei, Beilun, Zhenhai, and Fenghua—alongside the northern satellite cities of Yuyao and Cixi, and the southern counties of Xiangshan and Ninghai. Prominent landforms include the Chuanshan Peninsula, which holds mainland Zhejiang's easternmost point, and the Siming Mountains, which reach an elevation of 979 meters across the western and southern districts.

Ningbo features a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons, marked by hot, humid summers and chilly, dry winters that occasionally see snowfall. Monsoonal plum rains bring high humidity and rainfall in June, while typhoons can affect the region between August and October. The city is connected by road to Shanghai via the Hangzhou Bay Bridge.
