Why Ofakim
Located in the Southern District of Israel approximately 20 kilometers west of Beersheba, Ofakim is a city covering an area of roughly ten square kilometers. Meaning "Horizons" in Hebrew, the municipality was established in 1955 as an urban center for surrounding rural communities. Today, the town has a population of nearly 40,000 residents and features a diverse demographic landscape that includes ultra-Orthodox families, descendants of earlier Middle Eastern and North African immigrants, and communities from Ethiopia and the former Soviet Union.
The area surrounding Ofakim contains archaeological remains spanning from the Byzantine and Fatimid eras through the late Ottoman period. At the northern edge of the city lies Horbat Patish, an ancient settlement identified with the site of Photis from the historic Madaba map. Nearby historical landmarks include stone structures with rounded cupolas recorded by 19th-century visitors as probable grain storage units, as well as the historic Patish Fort situated to the east.
Originally developed around construction work and local agriculture, Ofakim evolved into a major textile manufacturing hub during the mid-20th century. After the eventual decline and closure of these industrial mills in the 1980s and 1990s, the local economy underwent a transition. Modern Ofakim has expanded through tax incentives, high-tech enterprises, small business support, and electronics manufacturing, accompanied by continuous urban renewal and new residential developments.
Visitors to Ofakim can access several leisure and sporting facilities throughout the city. The nearby Ofakim Forest features the Nahal Shomriya single-track cycling path, which covers 1,500 dunams of landscape along local stream beds and surrounding agricultural villages. Within the city itself, public amenities include a six-court tennis center, a soccer stadium, and a dedicated youth center containing a cinema.
Road access to Ofakim is provided by Highway 25, Route 241, and Highway 264, which connects to the Trans-Israel Highway. The city is also connected to the national rail network via the Ofakim railway station on the Ashkelon–Beersheba line. Opened in late 2015, the station offers regular train connections southeast toward Beersheba and northwest toward Ashkelon and Greater Tel Aviv.
