Located in the San Felipe district of Panama City's Old Town, the Palacio de las Garzas—also known as the Heron's Palace—serves as the official office and residence of Panama's president. Originally constructed in 1673 following the destruction of Panama Viejo by pirate Henry Morgan, this iconic colonial-style landmark offers you an incredible look into Panamanian state history. You will quickly discover how the palace earned its unique name as you enter the main courtyard, where live herons roam freely among white marble floors, mother-of-pearl columns, and a central fountain.
As you explore the interior, you can admire the 2nd-floor Andalusian courtyard featuring five allegorical sculptures by Gaetano Olivari, as well as the historic Yellow Room, which hosts state ceremonies amid striking historical murals painted by Roberto Lewis. Pay close attention to the details: you will spot visible bullet holes on the exterior façade left from a 1951 coup d'état, along with an elevator specially installed in 1934 to accommodate visiting U.S. President Franklin D.

Note that during major state events or summits, the resident herons are temporarily moved to Summit Municipal Park on the outskirts of Panama City.
