Sabarmati Ashram sits on the banks of the Sabarmati River in the Sabarmati suburb of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, located 4 miles from the town hall adjoining Ashram Road. As one of Mahatma Gandhi's primary residences, he lived here with his wife Kasturba and followers for years. It served as the starting point for the famous 1930 Dandi March and has since been established as a national monument.
When you visit, you will explore a serene complex featuring preserved historical cottages and the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya museum, designed by architect Charles Correa and inaugurated in 1963. You can step inside Hridaya Kunj, Gandhi's own cottage showcasing his personal relics, including the writing table he used for letters and the charkha used to spin khadi. You will also see Magan Niwas, which displays various charkha designs, Vinoba-Mira Kutir, the guest house Nandini, and the open-air prayer ground Upasana Mandir.
The museum galleries feature life-size oil paintings, hundreds of photo-enlargements, original letters, and an extensive library and archive. You can even visit the non-profit ashram book store to purchase memorabilia like postcards that support local artisans.
