Located at the west end of Sardar Bridge near Paldi in Ahmedabad, India, Sanskar Kendra is a city museum designed by the renowned Swiss-French Modernist architect Le Corbusier. Originally conceptualized as the Museum of Knowledge within a larger cultural center, its foundation stone was laid in April 1954. If you appreciate architecture, history, and culture, this destination offers a unique look into Ahmedabad's rich heritage.
The building itself is a key highlight, elevated on 3.4-meter pilotis with a plain brick exterior, exposed raw concrete, interior plaster finishes, and large roof basins designed to mitigate the hot climate. Entering from underneath through an open courtyard featuring a large pool, you will follow a ramp up to spiral-based exhibition spaces built to protect against the heat. Inside, you can explore detailed sections focusing on the city's history, art, photography, Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian independence struggle, and local religious communities.
Highlights include the world's tallest incense stick at 4.5 meters, the historic foundation block of Ellis Bridge, and the Patang Kite Museum, which showcases an incredible collection of kites, photographs, and related artifacts.
