St. Adalbert’s church 🇵🇱

Located at the intersection of Grodzka Street and the Main Market Square in Kraków's Old Town, the Church of St. Adalbert (also known as the Church of St. Wojciech) is one of Poland's oldest stone churches.

Its history reaches back nearly a thousand years to the early Polish Romanesque period. Originally constructed in the eleventh century, the place of worship actually predates the surrounding medieval market square by almost a century, serving early traveling merchants, citizens, and local nobility. When you step inside this living church, you will find a cramped interior set lower than the current plaza surface outside.

Be sure to view the unearthed lowest level of the walls, which features an authentic Romanesque portal and stone step on the south side. Higher up, you can admire Baroque modifications from the seventeenth century, such as stuccoed walls, a western entrance, and a Baroque dome. In the crypt beneath your feet, you can tour a small exhibit on the history of the Kraków Market hosted by the Archeological Museum of Kraków, reflecting centuries of rich urban history.
