St. Andrew’s Church 🇵🇱

Located at 54 Grodzka Street in Kraków's Old Town, the Church of St. Andrew is a historic Roman Catholic conventual church of the Order of Saint Clare. Constructed from stone blocks between 1079 and 1098 by Palatine Sieciech, this is one of Kraków's oldest buildings and among Poland's best-preserved Romanesque structures.

You will be visiting a rare surviving European fortress church that famously withstood the Mongol attack of 1241, sheltering city residents as a lower castle refuge. Looking at the exterior, you can admire its massive stone construction, twin octagonal towers featuring doubled arcade windows, an apse decorated with a modest arcade freeze, and small lower-façade openings used as defensive windows during military assaults. Entrusted to the Poor Clares in 1320, the site also includes a Gothic brick oratorio acting as the sacristy.

Inside, you can explore striking Baroque interiors from post-1700 refurbishments, contrasting with the severe Romanesque form. You will see rich stucco decorations by Baltazar Fontana, paintings by Karol Dankwart, gilded altars, and a high altar attributed to Francesco Placidi. Don't miss the unique boat-shaped pulpit, the musical choir with an 18th-century organ decorated in a rococo manner, and the Baroque domes added atop the towers in 1639.
