Located at Mariacki Square in the north-eastern corner of Kraków's Main Market Square, Saint Mary's Basilica is a magnificent 14th-century Brick Gothic parish church built on 13th-century foundations. Standing 80 meters tall, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers you a stunning encounter with Polish architectural history. Inside, you will discover the famous late-Gothic wooden altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss, considered a true sculptural masterpiece.

As you explore the interior, look up to admire monumental polychrome murals designed by Jan Matejko, created alongside Stanisław Wyspiański and Józef Mehoffer, who crafted stained glass for the presbytery. You will also experience a living tradition: every hour, 24 hours a day, a live trumpeter plays the Hejnał mariacki from the top of the taller tower. This plaintive tune abruptly breaks off mid-stream to honor a legendary 13th-century trumpeter shot while warning the city of a Mongol attack—a story popularized in the 1928 novel The Trumpeter of Krakow.

Whether you are drawn by its history, late Baroque altars, or iconic gilded tower crown added in 1666, visiting this historic sanctuary lets you witness one of Poland's finest Gothic architectural treasures firsthand.
