Tokyo is a wonderland for children — towers, gardens, arcades and food that looks like toys. The key is to mix the high-energy pop-culture stops with green space to decompress. These are the sights that keep younger travellers wide-eyed.

Go up first: the Tokyo Skytree is the tallest tower in Japan, with glass floors and a dizzying view, while the retro Tokyo Tower is a friendly orange landmark kids love, with its own lookouts and playful exhibits. Then unleash them in Akihabara, a riot of arcades, game centres and gadget shops — older kids and teens could happily spend hours in the multi-storey game halls.

Balance the buzz with green: Shinjuku Gyoen is a huge, calm garden with wide lawns made for running and picnics, and Ueno Park packs in a zoo, ponds you can paddle and several kid-friendly museums, so you can tailor it to the day. Add in Senso-ji & Asakusa, where the temple approach is lined with tiny shops selling toys, snacks and trinkets — a hit with children and free to wander.

Between sights, Tokyo makes eating fun: conveyor-belt sushi, plastic food models to choose from, crepes and character cafés. The trains are easy with kids (and a novelty in themselves), so cluster stops by area, build in park time, and do not over-pack the day. Each guide below has ticket details, how long to budget and the best time to visit, so you can plan a Tokyo day the whole family loves.

A few practical notes: Tokyo is remarkably easy with children — clean, safe and endlessly novel — but the distances are large, so anchor each day around one or two areas and use the trains, which kids find an adventure in themselves. Balance high-energy Akihabara with the wide lawns of Shinjuku Gyoen or Ueno, keep snacks handy, and note that many attractions have family discounts. Convenience-store meals are cheap, quick and surprisingly good for fussy young eaters on the go.
