Welcome to Tripoli Castle, locally known as As-saraya Al-hamra or the Red Castle, a massive waterfront fortress spanning roughly 13,000 square meters beside Martyrs' Square. When you visit this iconic landmark, you are stepping onto layers of history that trace back to ancient Phoenician and Roman foundations. Over the centuries, it was shaped by Fatimid rulers, Aragonese commanders, the Knights Hospitaller—who painted it red ochre—and Ottoman pashas.

Inside its sprawling, unequal walls, you will discover a fascinating maze of courtyards, historical buildings, and the Red Castle Museum, which first opened in 1919. As you explore, look out for remarkable architectural transformations made during the 1920s by Italian architect Armando Brasini. You can admire his medieval-style modification of the Saint George Bastion, a grand entrance portal crafted to look ancient, and the iconic stone arches crowning the Saint James Bastion that now overlook Saraya Lake.

You will also see former places of worship, including the Church of Saint Leonard, which was converted into a mosque during the Ottoman period. From being the royal center of the Karamanli dynasty to surviving 2011 civil conflict, this castle offers you an unforgettable glimpse into Libya’s deeply rich heritage.
