Warsaw is the capital and largest metropolis of Poland, situated along the Vistula River in the east-central region of the country. As the seat of the national government and the capital of the Masovian Voivodeship, this alpha global city serves as a major political, financial, and cultural hub. Spanning 18 districts over a total area of 517 square kilometers, it ranks among the most populous urban centers in the European Union.

Beginning as a modest fishing settlement on the Vistula, the city grew to become the capital of the Duchy of Masovia before its incorporation into the Kingdom of Poland. Warsaw's national prominence expanded significantly in 1596 when King Sigismund III relocated the royal court from Kraków, designating it as the capital of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Through subsequent eras of rapid industrialization, foreign rule, and heavy destruction during World War II, the city continuously re-emerged while retaining its historical identity.

A centerpiece of Warsaw's cultural heritage is its meticulously reconstructed Old Town, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980 for its rich representation of varied European architectural styles. Key historical landmarks line the famous Royal Route, including the Royal Castle, Sigismund's Column, St. John's Archcathedral, and the Main Market Square. Visitors can also explore grand royal residences such as Wilanów Palace and the Palace on the Isle. Complementing these historic treasures, modern Warsaw boasts one of Europe's largest concentrations of skyscrapers, headlined by the Varso Tower, which stands as the tallest building in the European Union.

Recognized as a green capital, approximately one-quarter of Warsaw's footprint is occupied by public parklands, including historic grounds like the Saxon Garden and the Royal Baths Park. The city supports a thriving artistic and academic scene, featuring prominent institutions such as the University of Warsaw, the Chopin University of Music, the National Museum, and the Warsaw Grand Theatre, which is among the largest operational theater complexes on the continent.

As a primary economic center for the region, the city hosts the Warsaw Stock Exchange as well as international entities including the EU agency Frontex, ODIHR, and an ESA facility. Travelers can access the capital through three international airports, led by Warsaw Chopin Airport. Within the city, a comprehensive public transportation network allows easy travel between districts via metro lines, buses, commuter trains, and an extensive tram system.
