Why Wenzhou

Situated on the southeastern coast of China in Zhejiang Province, Wenzhou is a prefecture-level municipality positioned along the estuary and lower reaches of the Ou River. Bordered by the Zhejiang–Fujian Hills to the west and the East China Sea to the east, the region serves as a junction connecting the Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone with the Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone. The municipal administration is based in the Lucheng District, while the broader region incorporates four districts, three county-level cities, and five counties.

Archaeological evidence from sites such as Caowan Mountain indicates that human activity in the region extends back approximately 5,000 years to the Neolithic era and the indigenous Ouyue people. The walled urban core was originally established in the fourth century under the Jin dynasty, laid out according to feng shui principles matching the Northern Dipper constellation. This layout gave rise to early names such as the Dipper City and Deer City. In 675, the Tang dynasty designated the region as Wenzhou, meaning warm prefecture, referencing its mild winter climate west of Wenqiao Ridge.

Historically functioning as a major seaport, Wenzhou was recognized for foreign trade during the Song and Yuan periods, officially made a treaty port in the nineteenth century, and designated an open coastal city in 1984. The city gained renown for its developed handicraft sectors, including paper production, lacquerware, shipbuilding, and early celadon pottery. During the Southern Song period, Wenzhou became associated with the Yongjia School, an intellectual tradition that emphasized pragmatic and business-friendly values, contributing to its modern role as an early center for market-oriented economic reforms.

Wenzhou is also characterized by its religious heritage and widespread international population. It features a notable proportion of religious believers, with Buddhism acting as the predominant faith alongside a significant Christian community. Additionally, the city serves as a major place of origin for overseas Chinese communities, with over two million people of Wenzhou background living across the globe and operating extensive business networks and commercial associations in more than a hundred countries.
