Located off White Oak Road in Falmouth, Stafford County, Virginia, White Oak Church offers you a fascinating glimpse into American history. Also known as White Oak Baptist Church or White Oak Primitive Baptist Church, this historic site features a simple, rectangular frame structure sheathed in weatherboard, constructed between 1789 and 1835. When you visit the property, you can explore several contributing historic elements, including a traditional woodshed, separate men's and women's outhouses, and two peaceful cemeteries. You will find that the church played a significant role during the Civil War. Beginning in November 1862, it served as the heart of a seven-month encampment for roughly 20,000 soldiers of the Army of the Potomac's VI Corps.

During this time, the building functioned as a vital military hospital, a United States Christian Commission station, and even a photographic studio. Following the war, veterans' descendants—including members of the 15th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry such as J. Frank Lindsley, Henry B. Hoffman, Dr. Joseph R.

Hoffman, Judge John B. Vreeland, and Thomas B. Ironside—returned on reunion trips and helped repair the structure. Recognized for its rich past, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
