Why Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg is an independent city in Virginia, situated along the fall line of the Rappahannock River between the coastal Tidewater and inland Piedmont regions. Positioned 53 miles south of downtown Washington, D.C., and 53 miles north of Richmond, it serves as an important historical and regional center. The city covers approximately 10.5 square miles and welcomes around 1.5 million visitors each year.

The area was originally home to indigenous Siouan and Algonquian groups before English colonists established Fredericksburg in 1728, naming it after Frederick, Prince of Wales. Located where the river ceased to be navigable for larger ships, the settlement grew into a major colonial port for exporting tobacco and receiving manufactured goods. The town shares deep roots with George Washington, whose family moved to nearby Ferry Farm in 1738 and whose mother and sister later lived in the area. Prominent historical residents also include figures such as John Paul Jones, Hugh Mercer, George Weedon, and James Monroe.

During the American Civil War, Fredericksburg held key strategic significance due to its location halfway between the rival capitals of Washington and Richmond. The town suffered heavy damage from military bombardment during the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862 and was the site of the Second Battle of Fredericksburg in 1863. In 1862, the area also saw a major movement toward freedom as more than 10,000 enslaved people crossed the Rappahannock River to reach Union lines.

Today, historical preservation and regional commerce drive much of the local economy. Visitors can explore preserved battlegrounds that form part of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. The community features a downtown visitor center, historic museums, art galleries, and craft shops, along with landmarks such as the historic Kenmore house. The city is also home to the University of Mary Washington and major retail destinations like Central Park.

Fredericksburg experiences a four-season humid subtropical climate marked by hot, humid summers and cool winters. Transportation through the area is facilitated by Interstate 95, U.S. Route 1, and U.S. Route 17, alongside passenger rail services via the Virginia Railway Express connecting the city to Washington, D.C., and other destinations.
