Shalamar Gardens

Step into the Shalamar Gardens in Lahore, Pakistan, to experience a UNESCO World Heritage Site crafted during the artistic zenith of the Mughal Empire. Constructed between 1641 and 1642 under Emperor Shah Jahan, this 16-hectare complex next to the Grand Trunk Road was designed as a Persian-style Charbagh paradise garden, representing an earthly utopia where humans coexist harmoniously with nature.

As one of Pakistan's most popular tourist destinations, the gardens are laid out in a rectangle across three distinct terraced levels, each rising 4 to 5 meters above the last. The uppermost terrace, Bagh-e-Farah Baksh, once catered to the Emperor's harem, while the middle terrace featured the Emperor's Garden and the lower level welcomed noblemen and the public.

As you explore, you will discover the site's astounding engineering, featuring elevated brick khayaban walkways, five water cascades—including the great marble cascade and Sawan Bhadoon—and marble chadors where water flows into wide pools called haūz. The complex boasts an incredible 414 fountains discharging across the terraces (105 on the upper level, 152 on the middle level, and 153 on the lower level), creating a cooling retreat surrounded by dense foliage.
