Located in the interior walled city of Lahore opposite the eastern walls of the Lahore Fort, the 17th-century Mosque of Mariyam Zamani Begum (also known as Begum Shahi Mosque) is Lahore's earliest dated Mughal-era mosque. Commissioned by Empress Mariam-uz-Zamani, the chief consort of Akbar and mother of Jahangir, this historic site was constructed between 1611 and 1614.
It stands out as an exceptional architectural bridge combining influences from the earlier Pashtun Lodi Dynasty—seen in its short domes and wide arches—with signature Mughal balconies, side rooms, and embellishments. Inside, you will discover Lahore's first five-bay prayer chamber covered in extraordinary fresco decorations featuring Iranian motifs, delicate geometric and floral patterns, stucco net forms, and sacred Quranic and non-Quranic Persian inscriptions.
Over its history, the Jami mosque served Mughal nobility, was converted into a Sikh royal place of worship and a gunpowder factory during Sikh rule, and was eventually restored to Muslims in 1850. Step through its deeply recessed arched gateways into the main courtyard to admire the remarkable craftsmanship, radiant golden tones, and rich history that helped inspire later grand Mughal masterpieces like the Wazir Khan and Badshahi mosques.
