Sarkhej Roza 🇮🇳

Located in Makarba village, just 7 kilometers southwest of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Sarkhej Roza is a Monument of National Importance and a historical Sufi mosque and tomb complex. Once home to Sufi saint Shaikh Ahmed Ganj Baksh, who advised Sultan Ahmed Shah to establish his capital nearby, this site offers a fascinating visit. You will discover a sprawling 14-hectare complex blending Islamic West Asian influences with Hindu and Jain architectural designs, forming a composite Indo-Saracenic style famously compared by architect Le Corbusier to the Acropolis of Athens.

When you enter the covered eastern gateway on the north bank of the 6.9-hectare Sarkhej Lake, you will see the grand mausoleum of Shaikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Bakhsh, featuring stone trellis work and an intricately cut open metal screen. Across the courtyard, you can explore the mausoleums holding Sultan Mahmud Begada, his family, and Queen Rajabai. Beyond the saint's mausoleum lies an impressive mosque set around an acre-sized courtyard.

You can also gaze across the lake's stone steps to view the ruined royal palace and harem at the southwest corner, or explore nearby historical sites like the Victory Garden and the tomb of Baba Ali Sher.
