Located on Bawa Latif Street in the historic Old Town neighbourhood of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, the Magen Abraham Synagogue is a remarkable religious landmark consecrated in 1934. Built through donations from the Bene Israel Jewish community, it stands as the only synagogue in the state of Gujarat and holds a proud place on the city's heritage list. Named in honour of Dr. Abraham Erulkar, this historic site offers you a fascinating look into a unique cultural lineage.
Inside, you will discover stunning Indo-Judaic Art Deco architecture designed by Daniel Samson and Ellis Abraham Bhinjekar. Step through its doors to admire marble chequered floors, high ceilings, triangular roofs, and elegant Grecian pillars. The interior showcases artistic grills, luminous stained glass windows, beautiful chandeliers, and movable pews arranged around a central Bimah. Take special note of the large Ark housing multiple Torah scrolls, as well as the unique women's balcony that stands unsupported by pillars.
Though the local community has dwindled since the 1980s, the synagogue remains active, regularly observing Pesah and High Holy Days. Paying a visit allows you to experience a vibrant piece of India's diverse heritage.
