Located at Cyril and Methodius Square near the Ljubljana Central Market and Town Hall, Ljubljana Cathedral—officially named Saint Nicholas's Church—is an easily recognizable landmark defined by its green dome and twin towers. Originally built as a Romanesque church and later converted to a Gothic style, the structure was rebuilt as a magnificent Baroque cathedral between 1701 and 1706. When you visit, you will find a rich blend of history and detailed artistic craftsmanship both inside and out.
On the exterior, admire the 1996 bronze doors featuring detailed historical reliefs, 19th- and 20th-century sandstone statues of bishops and saints, ancient Roman tombstones, a bright Gothic pietà copy, and an 1826 sundial inscribed with a Latin motto. Step inside to marvel at the original Baroque decor, highlighted by sweeping frescoes painted by Giulio Quaglio between 1703 and 1723. Look up to see the dome frescoes by Matevž Langus depicting the coronation of the Virgin and the glorification of Saint Nicholas, surrounded by angels and saints.
The interior also showcases remarkable altar angels sculptured by Paolo and Giuseppe Groppelli and Francesco Robba, as well as statues of the four bishops of Emona crafted by Angelo Putti.
