Located in central Kathmandu’s Durbar Square, Hanuman Dhoka is a historic royal palace complex built by the Malla kings and Shah dynasty. You will enter past a 1672 stone statue of the monkey god Hanuman—wrapped in red cloth beneath an umbrella—which gives the palace its name ("Dhoka" meaning door). Although severely damaged in the 2015 earthquake, this site offers you a fascinating look into Nepal's regal past.
As you explore, you will step into Nasal Chok, a rectangular courtyard featuring the platform where King Birendra was crowned in 1975, alongside the towering nine-storey Basantapur Tower. Walk past intricately carved doorways to see an array of exhibits across the complex's museums. You can view King Tribhuwan's recreated personal bedroom and study, impressive coronation thrones, weapons, jewel-studded ornaments, and artifacts chronicling the Shah Dynasty up to their reign's end.
Outside, do not miss the stone inscription written in fifteen languages—legend holds that milk will flow from its fountain for anyone who understands every script.
