Located in Jawalakhel, Nepal, the Central Zoo (also known as Kathmandu Zoo) offers a compelling glimpse into local and global wildlife across a 6-hectare (15-acre) setting. Originally established in 1932 by Rana Prime Minister Juddha Shumser as a private estate, this historical site officially opened to the public in 1956 and is currently operated by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC). As you explore, you will discover roughly 969 animals across 109 species, including 15 of Nepal's 38 endangered local species.
Keep an eye out for iconic creatures such as Royal Bengal tigers and one-horned rhinoceroses, alongside international wildlife like hippos, siamangs, chimpanzees, lemurs, and ostriches. The NTNC continues to upgrade facilities into larger, naturalistic enclosures while fostering research and education. At the heart of the grounds sits a historic 17th-century central pond—built during the reign of King Siddhi Narsingh Malla—which once served as the water source for Patan.
Today, you can take paddle boats onto the lake, visit the subtropical fish aquarium, enjoy picnic areas, bring kids to the fun park, or browse the onsite library.
