Algeria Square Mosque

Located right in the city centre of Tripoli, the capital of Libya on Algeria Square (also known as Elgazayer Square, Maidan al Jazair, or Maydan elgazayer), the Algeria Square Mosque—or Jamal Abdul Nasser Mosque—offers you a unique glimpse into the region's complex history. Originally completed in the 1920s as the Tripoli Cathedral during the Italian Libya colonial era, the building underwent a dramatic transformation following the rise to power of Muammar Gaddafi. In 1970, after the Revolutionary Council ordered the confiscation of Italian and church property, the cathedral was closed and repurposed into a mosque named after Gamal Abdel Nasser.

Official modifications to the structure began around that time, with sweeping exterior changes visibly completed between the late 1990s and 2000. When you visit today, you will see a fascinating architectural blend: the building retains its original overall shape, including the main basilica structure and a separate bell tower (campanile). However, both the interior and the façade have undergone major alterations to convert the space for Islamic worship.

Open to the public as an active place of worship since at least 2020, it is a compelling historical stop in central Tripoli.
