Discover Planty Park, a unique historic green belt completely surrounding the Old Town of Kraków, Poland. Built between 1822 and 1830 on the grounds of the city's destroyed medieval defensive walls, this expansive 52-acre (21-hectare) park stretches over 2.5 miles (4 km). It creates a scenic, tranquil walkway that remains immensely popular with local Cracovians.
As you stroll through this lush haven, you will experience a chain of thirty distinct smaller gardens, each designed in varied styles and filled with vibrant fountains and historic monuments. Keep an eye out for over twenty statues honoring noble figures, including famous astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, painter Jan Matejko, Queen Jadwiga, and King Wladyslaw II Jagiello, along with commemorative plaques dedicated to notable figures like mathematicians Stefan Banach and Hugo Steinhaus. The park naturally frames old Kraków, bordering the historic Wawel Castle on the Wawel Hill by the Vistula River meander at its southernmost edge.
Most of the city's historic sites line the park belt along the famous Royal Road, which passes straight through the park from the medieval Kleparz suburb and leads you past the preserved Florian Gate and Barbican. It is the perfect place to experience Kraków's rich heritage surrounded by nature.
