Situated in the suburbs of the modern capital, this historical gem was founded on August 15, 1519, by Pedro Arias Dávila and around 100 inhabitants. On January 28, 1671, Welsh privateer Henry Morgan attacked and sacked the settlement, leading to a catastrophic fire that completely consumed the city.
Consequently, Panama City had to be relocated and rebuilt a few kilometers to the west. A visit here offers you a direct connection to the Pacific coast's early colonial past, dramatic pirate attacks, and resilient historic ruins.
