Step into the Jama Masjid in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, a magnificent Friday mosque situated in the old walled city along Gandhi Road, just past the Teen Darwaza and outside the Bhadra Fort area. Built in 1424 under Sultan Ahmad Shah I, this Monument of National Importance was the fifth and most grandiose mosque constructed during his reign. You will explore a site emblematic of the distinct Gujarat style of architecture, which gracefully blends Indo-Islamic and traditional Hindu and Jain temple elements.

The massive complex features yellow sandstone construction and is centered on a vast rectangular courtyard measuring 75 by 66 meters. Inside, you can admire a wide-open white marble courtyard with a central basin for ritual ablutions, bordered by a colonnade painted with giant Arabic calligraphy. The main prayer hall on the western side houses 260 closely set columns supporting a three-level roof with 15 domes, creating an evocative maze of light and shadow.

Look closely to discover five intricate mihrabs along the west-facing Qibla wall, pierced stone jali screens, lotus flower carved domes, and pillars detailing a bell hanging on a chain. Outside the mosque complex, you can visit the nearby tombs of Ahmad Shah and his family.
