Located on the south side of Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan, Iran, the Shah Mosque (also known as the Imam Mosque or Imam Khomeini Mosque) stands as a monumental masterpiece of Safavid-era Persian architecture. Commissioned by Shah Abbas the Great in 1611 and completed around 1630, this UNESCO World Heritage Site showcases extraordinary engineering and grand urban planning. Because the square does not align with Mecca, the vestibule features a clever 45-degree turn, positioning the mosque perfectly toward the qibla while keeping its grand 52-meter double-shelled dome prominently visible from the square. Inside, explore the classic four-iwan layout, open courtyards, two-story arcades, winter prayer halls, and madrasas. You can marvel at the vast tilework crafted in the vibrant haft rangi (seven-color) style, featuring shades of dark blue, light blue, yellow, green, and white, alongside marble dadoes sourced from nearby Ardestan.
The central prayer hall houses a high marble mihrab tablet, and the impressive dome creates remarkable acoustics that allow prayers to echo clearly throughout the structure.
