Discover the rich history of Providence, Rhode Island, with a visit to the First Unitarian Church of Providence. Founded in 1723 as the First Congregational Society, this historic Unitarian Universalist congregation initially met at the "Old Town House" before establishing its current home at the corner of Benefit and Benevolent Streets. The present structure, dedicated in 1816, was designed by prominent local architect John Holden Greene using white stone quarried in Johnston, Rhode Island.

As you explore, you will admire its striking pedimented portico, tall tower, and an impressive spire reaching nearly 190 feet high. Inside the bell tower hangs a remarkable piece of American craftsmanship: the largest bell ever cast by the Paul Revere foundry in Canton, Massachusetts. The church has overcome significant adversity over the centuries, including a devastating four-hour fire caused by a 1966 lightning strike that required the meticulous restoration of its plaster detailing and organ.

Beyond its architecture, the church boasts notable historical ties, having hosted the funeral services for Civil War General Ambrose Burnside and suffragist Sarah Elizabeth Doyle, while maintaining an active civic presence, including voting to become a Sanctuary Church in 2017.
