Why Huntsville
Huntsville is the most populous city in Alabama, situated in the Appalachian region of the northern part of the state, just south of Tennessee. The city serves as the county seat of Madison County, with its borders extending into neighboring Limestone, Marshall, and Morgan counties. Nicknamed "The Rocket City," Huntsville grew across the hills north of the Tennessee River and has become one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States.
Originally settled in 1805 by pioneer John Hunt near the Big Spring, the community was incorporated in 1811 under its present name. It temporarily served as Alabama's first state capital in 1819, hosting the convention that drafted the state constitution. In the nineteenth century, the local economy expanded through cotton trade, textile mills, and the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, which was the first line connecting the Atlantic coast to the lower Mississippi River. Although held by Union forces during much of the Civil War, most of the city survived intact. In the 1930s, Huntsville transitioned to agricultural production, becoming a major regional center for watercress harvesting.
The city's focus shifted dramatically during World War II with the establishment of Redstone Arsenal for chemical munitions. After the war, the facility was converted into a federal rocket and guided missile development center, attracting notable rocket engineers including Wernher von Braun. This research led to the launch of Explorer 1, the nation's first artificial satellite, and supported the development of Saturn boosters for NASA's Apollo lunar program at the Marshall Space Flight Center.
Today, Huntsville remains a prominent high-technology and defense research hub. Redstone Arsenal houses major installations including NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, the United States Army Aviation and Missile Command, the FBI's operational support headquarters, and the United States Space Command. Adjacent to these facilities is Cummings Research Park, recognized as the second-largest research complex of its kind in the nation. The city also features significant civil rights heritage, having become the first municipality in Alabama to desegregate its public facilities in 1962.
