Why Karachi

Karachi is the largest city in Pakistan and the provincial capital of Sindh, situated along the shoreline of the Arabian Sea in the southern portion of the country. Recognized as a global city, it serves as the nation's primary industrial and financial hub, generating a substantial share of Pakistan's national gross domestic product and tax revenue. In addition to housing the country's main banking institutions and international corporate headquarters, the metropolis operates as a principal transport hub, containing the nation's busiest aviation facility, Jinnah International Airport, alongside its two major maritime harbors, the Port of Karachi and Port Qasim.

With a population exceeding twenty million people, Karachi is among the world's most populous and rapidly expanding metropolitan areas. It is widely regarded as Pakistan's most ethnically, linguistically, and religiously diverse city, accommodating resident groups from across the nation alongside large populations of Bengali immigrants, Afghan refugees, and Rohingya. The city also functions as a prominent cultural center, noted for its historical reputation as a vibrant metropolis and its status as a fashion capital that has hosted annual fashion week events since 2009.

Human habitation in the surrounding region dates back thousands of years, with prehistoric hunter-gatherer tools discovered in the northern Mulri Hills. Ancient Greek texts documented natural harbors and coastal features in the area, while local coastal trade developed under subsequent regional rulers. The modern municipality traces its formal establishment to 1729, when a fortified settlement named Kolachi was established near older fishing hamlets. Over the following century, control passed to the Talpur dynasty, who constructed the Manora Fort to safeguard the harbor against regional pirates.

British forces captured the settlement in 1839, subsequently making Karachi the capital of Sindh and integrating the region into the Bombay Presidency. Colonial administrators developed the city into a vital shipping and military location, constructing extensive railway connections, expanding the port for cotton and wheat exports, and erecting public landmarks in Gothic and Indo-Saracenic architectural styles, including Frere Hall and Empress Market. Following the creation of Pakistan in 1947, Karachi served as the national capital until 1959. Independence brought dramatic demographic shifts through migration, laying the foundation for the contemporary commercial metropolis.
