Why Lucknow

Lucknow is a major metropolis and the capital city of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, positioned along the banks of the Gomti River within the Indus-Gangetic Plain. The meandering river bisects the city into Trans-Gomti and Cis-Gomti areas. Lying at an elevation of approximately 123 meters, the municipality is encircled by countryside settlements and fruit-growing areas like Malihabad. Alongside Agra and Varanasi, Lucknow forms a vital component of the state's regional Heritage Arc.

Originally part of the ancient Kosala realm, the city was subsequently governed by the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughal Empire, the Nawabs of Awadh, and the British Empire. Lucknow became Awadh's capital in 1775, growing into a major regional center of literature, music, dance, and fine arts. This era cultivated a syncretic Hindu-Muslim cultural legacy referred to as Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb. The area was a pivotal focal point during the Indian Rebellion of 1857—marked by the Siege of Lucknow—and later played a crucial role in the national independence movement, including hosting the 1916 Congress session where the Lucknow Pact was established.

The city retains notable architectural landmarks constructed under the Nawabs, including the Rumi Darwaza, the Bara Imambara, and the Chota Imambara. Historic central commercial quarters include the built-up districts of Hazratganj, Aminabad, and Chowk. Insights into the events of 1857 are preserved at the ruined Residency complex and the Shaheed Smarak. Additional local highlights include the Lucknow Zoo, founded in 1921, a municipal botanical garden, and the Uttar Pradesh State Museum, which displays ancient Mathura carvings and an Egyptian mummy.

Designated as a City of Gastronomy by UNESCO, Lucknow is also globally recognized for its culinary heritage. The region has a humid subtropical climate defined by hot summers from late March to early June, where temperatures can reach 45 °C. The southwest monsoon delivers over 90 percent of the yearly rainfall between July and October. Dry, cool winter conditions run from late November through February, with frequent morning fog from mid-December to late January.
