Why Aleppo

Located in northern Syria within the Levant, Aleppo is the capital of the Aleppo Governorate and ranks as the country's second-largest city. Historically positioning itself as a crucial trading hub between the Mediterranean Sea and Mesopotamia, the settlement served as a major terminus along the ancient Silk Road. It is recognized as one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited urban areas, with human presence potentially dating back to the sixth millennium BC and documented occupation stretching back several thousand years.

The region's rich history is recorded in early cuneiform inscriptions unearthed at nearby Ebla and across Mesopotamia. In the early second millennium BC, Aleppo functioned as the capital of Yamhad, a powerful Amorite state, and emerged as a primary center for the worship of the storm god Hadad. Over subsequent centuries, control of the city shifted among major regional powers, including the Hittites, Hurrians, Assyrians, Neo-Babylonians, and Achaemenid Persians. Following Alexander the Great's conquest, Seleucid rulers established a Hellenic community named Beroea, which later prospered as a significant urban center within the Roman and Byzantine empires.

With the arrival of Islam in the seventh century, the city reverted to its ancient Semitic name, Ḥalab, and eventually became the capital of an independent emirate under the Hamdanid dynasty. During the Ottoman era, Aleppo grew into one of the empire's largest commercial centers. The shift in trade routes following the 1869 opening of the Suez Canal inadvertently helped preserve the city's medieval urban fabric and traditional architectural heritage. In recognition of its cultural wealth, Aleppo was designated as the Islamic Capital of Culture in 2006.

Visitors and researchers are drawn to Aleppo's prominent historic landmarks, most notably the central Citadel of Aleppo. Situated atop a prominent hill, this historic fortification contains the excavated temple of Hadad, ancient statues, and mosques adapted from earlier Byzantine churches. Surrounding archaeological mounds like Tell as-Sawda and Tell al-Ansari highlight the area's deep antiquity, while the surrounding regional countryside features late antique ruins such as the Church of Saint Simeon Stylites. Although parts of the city sustained extensive damage during recent conflict, ongoing reconstruction efforts continue to restore its affected neighborhoods and heritage sites.
