Why Bucharest

Bucharest is the capital and largest city of Romania, located on the banks of the Dâmbovița River in the south-eastern region of the country. Situated in the heart of the fertile Romanian Plain—traditionally said to be built upon seven hills—the municipality covers an area of 239 square kilometers and forms an enclave completely surrounded by Ilfov County. As the primary political, economic, and cultural hub of the nation, as well as the seat of government and the capital of the Muntenia region, Bucharest is home to an officially estimated 1.71 million residents within city limits, expanding to 2.31 million across its larger metropolitan area.

First documented in 1459 as a residence for ruler Vlad the Impaler, the city evolved into the main administrative and commercial center of Wallachia. It officially became the capital of the United Principalities in 1862 and later the Kingdom of Romania in 1881. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Bucharest earned the nickname Paris of the East due to its cosmopolitan atmosphere and eclectic architecture. Following significant damage during World War II, the city expanded rapidly under communist rule. This period brought socialist planning, notably Nicolae Ceaușescu's systematization program, which led to the clearance of historic quarters to construct the Civic Centre and the massive Palace of the Parliament. Following the 1989 revolution, the capital transitioned into a period of ongoing modernization and historical restoration.

The city's physical layout is complemented by an array of waterways, lakes, and extensive green spaces. A chain of northern lakes along the Colentina River includes Lake Herăstrău, Lake Floreasca, Lake Tei, and Lake Colentina. In the heart of the city lies the historical Cișmigiu Gardens, centered around a small artificial lake designed in the mid-19th century by German architect Carl F.W. Meyer. Other prominent green destinations include Herăstrău Park, Tineretului Park, and the Cotroceni neighborhood's Botanical Garden, which features thousands of plant species. To the south, Văcărești Nature Park—often called the Delta of Bucharest—sprawls over 190 hectares, protecting a unique wetland ecosystem within an abandoned concrete basin originally intended for a socialist reservoir project.

Visitors exploring the city encounter a blend of grand avenues and notable landmarks. University Square marks the city center, featuring the country's symbolic Kilometre Zero marker near the New St. George Church. Historic thoroughfares like Calea Victoriei host iconic structures alongside interwar landmarks such as the Arcul de Triumf and Palatul Telefoanelor. Major cultural venues, including the Grigore Antipa Museum near Victoriei Square, sit alongside restored historic arcades and quarters that highlight the metropolis's rich heritage.

Today, Bucharest stands as one of the most prosperous commercial centers in the region and a rapidly growing hub for high technology in Europe. The city offers abundant recreational spaces, educational institutes, traditional shopping arcades, and large convention facilities.
