Why Bergkamen

Bergkamen is a town located within the district of Unna in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Situated along the southern bank of the Lippe River, the municipality occupies a position in the eastern portion of the Ruhr Area, directly south of the Münsterland region. Geographically, it is located approximately fifteen kilometers northeast of the city of Dortmund and roughly fifteen kilometers southwest of Hamm.

The contemporary town of Bergkamen was officially established in 1966 through the merger of five smaller local communities. Despite its relatively recent formation as a unified municipality, human activity in the vicinity dates back to ancient Roman times. Historical heritage from this early era is preserved at the Roemerlager archaeological site, as well as within the Bergkamen Municipal Museum, locally known as the Stadtmuseum, which features a prominent department dedicated to Roman antiquities. The town's history also incorporates a significant industrial past, which includes the deadliest mining accident in German history when a coal dust explosion took the lives of 418 miners in February 1946.

Bergkamen offers several recreational landscapes and points of interest for visitors. A key maritime destination is the Westphalian Sports Boat Centre, located at Marina Ruenthe. Outdoor leisure space is available nearby at the Beversee national trust area, a protected natural reserve. In addition, the landscape features Grosses Holz, a wooded hill that was created by renaturalizing a former industrial slag heap into a scenic green space.

Cultural life in Bergkamen is centered around local artistic venues and recurring community festivals. Visual arts exhibitions are hosted at both the municipal Stadtmuseum and the town's dedicated art gallery, known as sohle1. Dramatic arts and stage productions are regularly held at the studio theater bergkamen. The town's annual calendar features two main public events: the Hafenfest harbour festival held each June, and the Lichtermarkt light festival celebrated every October.

In addition to its regional connections, Bergkamen maintains international municipal ties. The town is officially twinned with four sister cities across Europe and Asia Minor: Hettstedt in Germany, Silifke in Turkey, Gennevilliers in France, and Wieliczka in Poland.
