Why Hennef
Hennef, officially known as Hennef (Sieg), is a German town located in the Rhein-Sieg district of North Rhine-Westphalia. Positioned along the Sieg River, the town lies roughly seven kilometers southeast of Siegburg and fifteen kilometers east of Bonn. It stands as the fourth-largest municipality within its district and is frequently referred to as the "City of 100 villages," holding an official count of 89 constituent villages.
Historical records mention the area as early as 885, when the current district of Geistingen was documented. Hennef itself was first noted in 1075 under the name "Hannafo." The local area also features notable historical architecture, including Schloss Allner, a fifteenth-century castle situated near the Allner See lake. Additionally, the historic town of Stadt Blankenberg falls within Hennef's boundaries and features the historic Castle of Blankenberg.
Beyond its historical structures, Hennef is recognized for various local developments and cultural associations. It is the site where Carl Reuther invented the world's first calibratable automatic weighing scales. In music history, the pop song "What Is Love" by Haddaway was written and produced within the town. Hennef has also hosted international athletics; the German national football team occasionally utilizes the Sportschule Hennef training center, and the Argentina national football team resided at the facility during the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup. The local club Hennef '05 was established in 2005 through the merger of Tura Hennef and F.C. Geistingen.
Globally, Hennef maintains formal twin town relationships with several international communities. These include Banbury in the United Kingdom, Le Pecq in France, Nowy Dwór Gdański in Poland, and Foley, Alabama, in the United States.
