Why Oberursel
Oberursel, officially known as Oberursel (Taunus), is the thirteenth-largest town in the German state of Hesse. Situated directly northwest of Frankfurt within the Hochtaunuskreis county, the town forms an integral part of the Frankfurt Rhein-Main urban region. The municipal territory stretches approximately seven kilometers from its northern to southern borders and thirteen kilometers from east to west. It shares boundaries with neighboring municipalities including Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Kronberg, Schmitten, Steinbach, and Frankfurt. Terrain elevations within the town range from 138 meters above sea level at Krebsmühle to 300 meters at Hohemark, while the nearby Große Feldberg peak stands at 820 meters as the highest summit in the Taunus range.
In addition to the central town area—which incorporates the annexed district of Bommersheim—Oberursel comprises the distinct districts of Oberstedten, Stierstadt, and Weißkirchen. Historical records first documented the settlement under the name Ursella in 791, followed by references to a local monastic church in 880. Trading was recorded by 1317, and official town status was granted in 1444. Protective walls were completed shortly after receiving town rights and were expanded eastward in 1481 to accommodate population growth. A Latin school was established in the early sixteenth century, and a printing press was introduced in 1557. Cloth manufacturing served as the primary local industry during the late Middle Ages and early modern era.
During the Thirty Years' War, Oberursel experienced extensive devastation, particularly from a major fire in 1645 that left only the old town hall, a bakery, and one residential building intact. As a result, the majority of historic structures standing in the core old town date from the seventeenth century. Subsequent reconstruction brought mills and iron forges along the Urselbachtal stream, followed by cotton-spinning plants during the mid-nineteenth century. In World War II, the town was the site of Dulag Luft, a transit processing camp for captured Allied airmen, which was later converted into the American military installation Camp King before being redeveloped into a residential neighborhood.
Cultural sights include the Vortaunusmuseum, situated on the town square, which highlights regional history alongside displays on soap box derbies. The derbies originated in Oberursel, which hosts an annual world championship event. Local heritage is also celebrated during the Brunnenfest, a traditional summer fair that draws visitors to the town, which also hosted the fifty-first Hessentag state festival in 2011.
Oberursel functions as an educational center for the Hochtaunuskreis county, hosting primary, secondary, international, and vocational schools, as well as specialized facilities such as an institute for bee research. The local economy is driven by sectors including technology, insurance, and tourism services. Road travel is served by the A661 motorway near the Bad Homburger Kreuz interchange with the A5 motorway, with Frankfurt Airport located roughly twenty minutes away. Public transit options encompass local bus routes, weekend night buses to Frankfurt, the S5 suburban rail line, and the U3 subway line offering direct connections to central Frankfurt.
