Why Rodgau
Rodgau is a town situated in the Offenbach district of Hesse, Germany, located southeast of Frankfurt am Main within the Frankfurt Rhine Main Region. Holding the largest population of any municipality in its district, Rodgau assumed town status in 1979 following a 1977 administrative merger of five independent communities: Weiskirchen, Hainhausen, Jügesheim, Dudenhofen, and Nieder-Roden, along with the small settlement of Rollwald. While the unified town is relatively young, the histories of its individual constituent communities reach back to the 8th century.
Geographically, the municipality rests on the flat terrain of the Lower Main Plain, forming part of the northern Rhine rift. The 50th parallel north latitude passes directly through Puiseaux-Platz in Nieder-Roden. Land usage across the town is divided roughly into thirds, comprising forested land, agricultural plots and open water, and developed urban or transit space. The 15-kilometer Rodau brook flows across the entire municipal territory. Regional weather is characterized as one of Germany's mildest and least rainy climates, with surrounding natural features such as the Taunus, Spessart, Vogelsberg, Odenwald, and Bergstraße ranges providing accessible outdoor recreation.
Each district preserves distinct historic features and landmarks. In Hainhausen, the smallest district, subterranean remnants of a 12th-century moated castle lie beneath a meadow along Burgstraße near the Rodau. Hainhausen is also notable for Saint Roch's Church, which displays a carved 14th-century pietà sculpture and serves as the destination for an annual procession held on August 16. In Weiskirchen, points of interest include Saint Peter's Church and a small, restored former synagogue that operates as a memorial.
Other districts contain prominent architectural structures. Jügesheim, which hosts the local Town Hall, features a 43.5-meter-tall historical water tower constructed between 1936 and 1938 that now stands under monument protection as a symbol for the town. Dudenhofen showcases a Baroque Evangelical church adorned with the coat of arms of Hesse-Kassel above its entry, alongside a local history of asparagus farming. Nieder-Roden, the largest district, possesses the area's earliest written records dating back to 786, when the Rotaha Monastery was first documented.
