Why Waltrop
Waltrop is a town situated in the Recklinghausen district within the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Positioned along the Datteln-Hamm Canal, the municipality lies roughly 15 kilometers east of Recklinghausen and about 15 kilometers northwest of Dortmund. The main urban center is enveloped by several rural boroughs, including Lippe (divided into Unterlippe and Oberlippe), Elmenhorst, Brockenscheidt, Leveringhausen, Oberwiese, and Holthausen.
Human presence in the region traces back approximately two millennia. The modern settlement originally formed around the parish church of St. Peter, which was constructed during the ninth or tenth century. In 1432, the locality belonged to the county of Dortmund. Following the Soest Feud, authority shifted as the archbishops of Cologne intervened, causing the area to become part of Vest Recklinghausen. The town was granted official municipal rights in 1939.
During the early twentieth century, the area transformed into an industrial municipality when local coal extraction commenced in 1905. The mining era eventually came to a close during the late twentieth century, with one facility shutting down in 1979 and the remaining operations concluding in 1992. Today, commercial activities in the municipality include specialized businesses such as the trailer manufacturer Langendorf and the retail headquarters of Manufactum, which focuses on traditionally crafted housewares.
Visitors to the town can explore preserved heritage sites related to its industrial past. Notable attractions include the historic Zeche Waltrop former coal mine and a dedicated museum exhibiting old ship lifts, such as the Henrichenburg boat lift along the local waterway system.
