Why Bühl

Situated in the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg, Bühl is a town of approximately 29,000 residents located within the district of Rastatt. Geographically positioned in the region between the Rhine Valley and the Black Forest, it lies about ten kilometers south of Baden-Baden. As the third-largest municipality in Rastatt County, following Rastatt itself and Gaggenau, Bühl functions as a central hub for numerous neighboring towns, townships, and rural communities.

The origins of Bühl date back to the twelfth century. Its name is derived from historic German words meaning hill, an etymological link visually represented in the local coat of arms. First recorded on a judicial seal in 1324, this emblem displays three yellow hills set on a blue backdrop. Historically referred to as Bühl (Baden) to differentiate it from other settlements of the same name in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, the town was officially designated a major district town on January 1, 1973, following state administrative reforms.

Over the centuries, Bühl transitioned from a rural community into a modern commercial center. In past times, it gained widespread fame specifically for its plum cultivation. Today, the local economy revolves primarily around industrial operations, with a particular emphasis on supplying the automotive manufacturing industry. Despite this shift toward modern manufacturing, the town has preserved its character and is widely renowned for its dining scene and quality restaurants.

In administrative terms, Bühl incorporates eleven distinct outlying villages: Altschweier, Balzhofen, Eisental, Kappelwindeck, Oberbruch, Oberweier, Moos, Neusatz, Rittersbach, Vimbuch, and Weitenung. Furthermore, the municipality forms a joint administrative community alongside the neighboring municipality of Ottersweier.

Throughout its history, Bühl has been associated with various prominent figures across academia, the arts, and athletics. Notable individuals connected to the town include theology professor Alban Stolz, orientalist Julius Ruska, biochemist Haim Ernst Wertheimer, philatelist Herbert J. Bloch, writer Odile Kennel, and filmmaker Dominik Moll. Athletic figures tied to Bühl include mountaineer Ralf Dujmovits, Olympic silver medalist shooter Christian Lusch, and handball player Stefan Kneer.
