Why Hattersheim am Main
Hattersheim am Main is a town situated in the Main-Taunus district of Hesse, Germany. Positioned along the Main River, it forms part of the broader Frankfurt Rhein-Main metropolitan region. The town is bordered by several neighboring municipalities, including Frankfurt to the northeast, Kelsterbach to the southeast, Raunheim to the southwest, and Flörsheim, Hofheim, and Kriftel to the west.
The municipality comprises three distinct districts: Hattersheim, Eddersheim, and Okriftel. The latter two riverside villages were incorporated into the municipality in 1972, prompting the official name change to Hattersheim am Main. Historically, the area was a significant manufacturing hub, notably hosting a major Sarotti chocolate production plant. Following a corporate merger with Nestlé in 1929, the facility expanded to become one of the largest employers in the region during the 1960s, employing up to 2,000 people. Although the factory ceased operations in 1994, the site has been preserved as a designated historic location.
Visitors exploring the town's districts can observe notable local landmarks and transport features. The central area of Eddersheim, which is also the birthplace of engineer and inventor Anton Flettner, features a lock along the Main River. In Okriftel, travelers can utilize a seasonal river ferry that operates on summer Sundays, connecting the district across the water to neighboring Kelsterbach.
The town maintains international cultural connections through formal sister-city partnerships with Sarcelles in France, Mosonmagyaróvár in Hungary, and Santa Catarina in Cape Verde.

Regional rail connectivity is provided by Hattersheim am Main station and Eddersheim station, both situated on the S1 line of the Rhine-Main S-Bahn, offering regular train services to Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, and surrounding areas. Additionally, Frankfurt Airport is located just to the east, while the Bundesautobahn 3 and Bundesautobahn 66 motorways pass close to the town.
