Why Verden

Verden, officially known as Verden an der Aller, is an independent municipality and district seat located in the state of Lower Saxony, Germany. Positioned within the middle Weser region, the town sits directly along the Aller River just before it joins the Weser. Historically situated at a practical river ford along an important trade route, its name derives from terms meaning ford or ferry. Today, Verden is widely recognized as an equestrian center, earning it the moniker of riding town due to its deep connection to horse breeding, horse racing, and sport horse auctions.

The town possesses a long and complex history dating back to the Early Middle Ages. It was the site of the Massacre of Verden in 782 during the Saxon uprisings under Charlemagne. Over the centuries, control shifted through various historic events, including the establishment of the Catholic Prince-Bishopric of Verden following the division of the Duchy of Saxony in 1180. Granted town rights under Bremian law in 1259, it eventually operated as a Free Imperial City. Following the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the northern and southern sections of the settlement were unified. The region subsequently experienced Swedish, Danish, Hanoverian, and British post-war control before modern expansion and international immigration shaped its population in the late 20th century.

Visitors to Verden can explore an array of cultural sights situated primarily east of the Aller River. A prominent landmark is the Lutheran Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Cecilia, which was constructed between the 12th and 15th centuries. The cathedral dominates the local skyline near a pedestrianized high street lined with shops and outdoor cafés. Additional architectural highlights in the historic center include the Lutheran churches of Saint John and Saint Andrew, the historic town hall, and the Domherrenhaus, a residence historically associated with cathedral canons. The local landscape also features a decorated mural painted on a converted former fodder silo.

Verden is conveniently located roughly 35 kilometers from Bremen and 90 kilometers from Hannover. Its infrastructure encompasses residential neighborhoods built on former military sites, modern athletic facilities, administrative centers, and major industrial operations, including a significant European pet food production and research facility.
