Why Geilenkirchen
Geilenkirchen is a German town located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia within the district of Heinsberg. Situated along the Wurm River, the community lies near the border of the Netherlands. It is positioned roughly 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) northeast of the Dutch city of Heerlen and about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) north of Aachen.
The town's history includes being the site of Operation Clipper during World War II in November 1944. Historically, Geilenkirchen is also connected to several notable figures. It is the birthplace of Ludolf Camphausen, a banker who served as Prussian minister president during 1848, and Otto von Camphausen, a Prussian finance minister. Other individuals born in the town include physician Max Wilms, physician Hans Meyer, politician Marlon Bröhr, and theologian Christoph Dohmen.
Geilenkirchen lends its name to the nearby NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen. This military facility serves as the base for seventeen E-3A airborne early warning and control aircraft, which are operated by flight crews originating from more than fourteen different countries.
In terms of weather conditions, the town experienced a historic climate event on July 24, 2019. During a widespread European heatwave, Geilenkirchen temporarily recorded the highest temperature ever documented in Germany at 40.5 °C (104.9 °F), a mark that was surpassed in another location the following day.
